2012-02-12 A gremlin krept into the race results... and instead of deducting 5 minutes from the Hounds finish time I only deducted 2 minutes. This affects the rankings which are based on Race Time..The 1st Channel Rules swimmer -Jakob van Rouendal Smit (0274)who shifts ahead of Philip Myburg (0850) and Tara Frohlich (0361) is the 1st Female Wetsuit.

This does change the result table and I do apologise for my error.

Race Commentary

The build up to February had unique aspects... top of the list is my Dad Kev became a Grandpa and myself and younger brother Deon became Uncles to a Baby Boy born to my elder brother Laurie. CONGRATULATIONS!


A full new set of swim buoys were purchased and constructed - to add a clean slate to the swim. I hope this keeps visibility of the route hight.Technical glitches saw the bulksms not being sent ahead of the 1st Sunday of February. This has the downside that race numbers are not re-distributed. After 6 years I truly hope that my consistency of having the swim if there are more than 3 swimmers (and new constraint that water temp is above 8'C) brings swimmers down as a matter of regularity.

Race honours belong to

Channel Rules: Philip Myburg (#850) who pipped newcomer Miles Messop (#1066) to the beach. (Both swimmers should have left with the Hounds!)

Sarah Haiden (#0025) was the 1st of the fairer sex.

Wetsuits: Bryan Allott (#843) maintained his form beating Chad Noble (#779) to the finish. Possibly these two racing in the same group of Hounds assisted them.

Newcomer Kathrin Walther (#1060) was the 1st female wetsuit back.

As usual I spend more time near and around the pack than the leader-board. Also I spend time talking with newcomers and regulars finding out about their goals and tweaking some swim strokes. Yes I am a busy body. This month I was stoked to have all starters finish. What gets people through is in some instances sheer determination. A minor concern is sighting swimmers who swim off their shoulders and not triceps-lats. My concern stems from injuries I self-sustained by a similar fault. Remember you have more muscle strength in the triceps-lats than in the shoulders (shoulders should not move forward).

A couple of newcomers have there sights set on
 a Robben Island Crossing... my advice is do your homework! Train, feed and practice what you are planning to do in training for 120% of the distance intended. Select you day - ask advice
Others are targeting the triathlon circuit Xterra, Iron Man etc. Practice transistions which include activating your legs before exiting the water (last 100m at least).
And Yet others have Open Water swims as a ambition - remember to familiarise yourself with the route -ask questions about safety and hazards. Swim with a buddy and be highly visible (!).. in tis vein the Brian Curtis Mile, Redhouse Mile, Round -the-Rocks are all on the cards before end of February.

X-training
Cycle: Argus Cycle Tour is mid-march and 99'er is this weekend... I know there are some swimmers who are spending early mornings on the saddle... High Visibility please!!
Running: Two Oceans and a number of road/off-road races are taking place.. Run buddy yourselves...
Couch potatos :.. Don't think that the couch won't be there when you are older.. Go out howl at the moon... select a sport.. Live Life

I called the water FRESH - it was the warmest its been the entire year... just the way to revive yourself after a late night of revelry....

I was at the CTICC for Ministry of Sound but even before I got to the doors I was being asked by Lodi and Meg what time race briefing was... ;-) I lasted until after midnight - lots of energy and great vibe -just not my tunes.


The Clifton Cold Water Mile has its place as the forerunner to 1st Sunday of Month Swim ("1SOMS") when in 2006 it took place on a Sunday. Hester S was again there on the start line as one of the original 5. The format of this differs from 1SOMS as it is a mass wetstart - with Wetsuits being set-off 2 minutes after Channel Rules.

Many I know use these swims as a reference point for their fitness - in less than a month is the 70.3 Triathlon in Port Elizabeth. Atlantic Triathlon Club (ATC) members put in a decent showing for that.. There are others who use this opportunity to catch up with friends and like-minded people. I do believe many friendships have come out of this "shared swimmability"... (I even know of a crew that ended up at Vulcanology and headed for the swim directly after... ;-) Of course marking your race number on your hand is always a conversation starter). Swimmers from other parts of the globe drop-by to swim and then are gracious in playing host when SA'ffers traipse to their 'hood .

On the day - times were very much governed by the route selected- deep sea outbound and shallow return leg was the preferred route. Those who swam otherwise saw the results in their times.

A HUGE THANK YOU to the Beach Control Team - Nats A has been at the last 5 New Year's Day Swim, Ilana K was there to support her swimmer and was roped into recording times, Deon F led out the swimmers on malibu and Kevin F took the pics. Thanks NSRI are keeping an eye on proceedings out on the water; while SAPS kept a watchful eye on what was happening around the beach zone.

In the background - Grant Spooner from Marine Scene was the source for the swim buoys while Martine Levy lent the HD waterproof camera for the pix. Barksole (Tygervalley) were the source of the trophies and came to the rescue to have them ready in time. The swimming crew who helped schlep the race gear backup to the car after the swim (Sean G, David T, Allon B, Richard H and friends)

In the foreground - if it were not for YOU the swimmer this swim would not take place... Next year I intend to arrange recognition by way of medal or the like to commemorate those who opted for a FRESH start to the New Year.

 What an awesome swim day... This is the last 1st Sunday of the year!

The South-Easter blew in all its fury on Saturday..and I even received a BBM asking if the swim was practical..my response was that it would be nippy but the swim would be on.


The Lapper route was utilised for a number of reasons - primary being safety. With a water temperature sub-10'C it is imperative that any swimmer electing to withdraw is sufficiently close to shore to return under own power. While of the 2 routes this is the more protected it is nevertheless a tough 1.6km (800m lap). The times reflect this. A distinct advantage is spectator viewability as the family and friends that were dragged down to accompany the swimmers were able to watch the entire swim saga unfold.

The ladies race showed some fine form with Nadine Ballot (#0109) taking 1st place in  0:27:57 ahead of Wetsuited Katrin Voight (#0921) 0:28:07 and Sarah Haiden (#0025) 0:28:37 .

A Milestone was reached this swim with Greg Schneider registering as the 1000th participant since 2006. I'll admit that there are some swimmers who have registered more than once but after removing these there are 848 unique swimmers since 2006. He does however retain a milestone race number which I hope to see at many future races. CONGRATULATIONS!!

THANK YOU - WITH OUT YOUR ASSISTANCE THE 1st Sunday of Month Swim would not have been possible....

So many came to assist that I am overwhelmed.. A huge THANK YOU to NSRI who brought their boat around from Bakoven, Mark Paarhui who brought down 2 other Stand Up Paddleboarders to provide a presence in the water, Cameron Horner who was the paramedic on the day, Grant Spooner from Marine Scene who provided the 4 swim buoys complete with lines and anchors, Martine Levy who "adopted" the admin desk and recording of positions, Kevin Fialkov who remains the starter and head-count control, Deon Fialkov for admin assistance.


Practicalities of holding this swim is that more people/organisations/... need to get involved. The learning curve of the last 5 years has resulted in a many refinements which have have made this swim part of the Cape Town swim calendar. I still get the emails from overseas and out-of-Cape asking where? what? how? I also follow with interest the swims taking place elsewhere and where possible direct swimmers to these opportunities.

Other swims coming up.... V&A Canal is the venue for a swim at 5pm on Wednesday 7 December ; Worcester plays host to  a 3.3km on Saturday (14h00) and a Jailbreak triathlon on Sunday 11 December. I am less aware of swims taking place on the False Bay coastline - in years gone by the Fish Hoek Mile on 16 December was a feature. The Clifton Cold Water Mile is (what 1st Sunday of Month Swim grew out of ) is on 1 January . Blouberg hosts the Round-the-Rocks at end of February. (Llandudno held their swim a little over 2 weeks ago). Next year sees WP Aquatics is hosting a qualifier for the Midmar Mile in early January. Up the coast I believe that there is a swim at Knysna Heads as well as one at Plettenberg Bay . The Redhouse Mile is mid-February.

A word on Safety.. I am often asked about this topic... South Africa has an incredible coastline which is very diverse. When you go down to a stretch of water look out for the lifesavers who patrol - go and ask their advice as regards the hazards and recommendations for enjoying the water. Swim between the red-yellow patrol flags. If you are planning a long distance swim firstly find a swim buddy, second ensure that you are visible (bright swim cap - you are not the only ocean user), thirdly inform the lifesavers on the beach (out of courtesy) that you are going for a swim of <specified time> or <specified distance>. Lets try keep the emergency services for emergencies and not because you neglected to consider others. Last but not least - HAVE FUN!

Next 1st Sunday of Month Swim is on the 1 January 2012 and is superseded by the Annual Clifton Cold Water Mile. The format is a mass wet-start following the Miler route (if weather permits).

Race briefing is 12 o'clock (midday) and be sure to pre-register (i.e. You need to have a race number). Check the calendar.

This has been quite a week!... The forecast was for >4.5m swell today... I even sat an contemplated whether given the state-of-play whether to abandon 1st Sunday of Month Swim. I even went so as to sms outwards that this was a social swim with a buddy system in place. Out of a very unexpected corner came swimmers and lifesavers to the rescue ! A number of sms's backwards and forwards followed by an email with route maps (and risk assessments) and 1SOMS was back in the water.Thank you Ram and Derrick.


The Lapper route was elected given the powerful wave-action over Cherry reef and the restriction to SUP and malibu's for the safety team. (Nevertheless this route consists of a 800m circuit which was completed twice (A wet-start and wet-finish criteria was adhered to)).

1st back to the beach and the fastest wetsuit honours goes to Luke Ferguson who (again!) elected to race with the Hares in order to make a 10am appointment. Channel Rules honours goes to Emma who along with Ryan raced a fine race.

There remains  a number of gremlins to be resolved before 1SOMS can stabilize and grow.I am hoping to meet with the stakeholders and agree a route forward. I would like to hear from swimmers who have participated at 1SOMS since it started in 2006 - the 2 questions I have are 1.Did it make a difference to your enjoyment of open water? 2.Is its something that raises the profile of Clifton? (Any suggestions?). If someone could tell me how to allow comments to this website it would go far.

Q:What do you get after two days of South-Easter in Cape Town? Answer : Monday

Clifton is one of 2 North-facing beaches in the Western Cape ...and thus fortunately protected from the ravages of the Cape Doctor (to a degree!).. there is no escaping the chilling effect after sustained winds though.


After measuring the water temperature and discussion with the safety team (and medic) it was agreed that it would be foolhardy to continue with a sanctioned (permit) event. I have maintained to date that if there are 3 prepared to swim then a swim race is in play - however now after considering the wind-chill effect in combination with a digitally measured water temperature sub-9'C I think its time to put a "soft-block" in place. (Considering the wind-chill I would estimate the ambient ("feels-like") water temp to have been about 6'C - not the recommended conditions for a swim race). Exercising the mind I probably would have recommended the swim if the wind were absent.

Last month I erred in excluding a swimmer on the basis of an incident outside the 1st Sunday of Month Swim event. I extend my apologies to that swimmer.

Going forward 1st Sunday of Month Swim (aka "1SOMS") is going to be targeted at the novice-intermediate level open water swimmer . This means that the route selected will be measurable (both in distance and timing) ; safety will be paramount and steps taken to reduce risk.

NON-NEGOTIABLES at 1SOMS

1.      Silicon swim-cap used (Reason: Hypothermia (or near hypothermia) is the most reported incident).

2.      Silicon swim-cap is BRIGHT i.e. Yellow, Orange, Pink (Reason: Head counts are continually conducted)

3.       Attendance at Race and Safety Briefing is mandatory (Reason: Route, precautions, hazards need to be known).

4.       Give Race number & Name to admin desk before leaving the beach (Reason: Head count recon is done before the safety-team can stand-down).

5.      Any swimmer not finishing within 35 minutes of the 1st finisher will be marked DNF.

6.      Please report any incident or unsportsmanlike conduct to Official-in-Charge. Feedback will be given as soon as these are addressed.

Costs to organise the 1st Sunday of Month Swim have almost doubled - entry fees will have to increase from R40 to R60 to offset this increase.

Discussions are underway with a sponsor to increase participation and benefits to participants.

To re-balance the field between Hares and Hounds the last 6 months of race times will be used to recommend a start group. You can always elect to race with the Hounds but if you are earmarked as a Hound you should start with the Hounds.

A big thank you to those that came down on Sunday - I do believe the reasons for the abandonment of the swim on Sunday was explained and accepted.

Spring! And I think one of the wettest/greyest 1SOMS for quite some time. The forecast on Wednesday was a massive 8m swell on Friday to drop-off to 2.8m by Sunday noon. By Thursday the forecast had deteriorated to 3.2m On Sunday and at 6h30 on Sunday the forecast was for 3.4m for 1SOMS. Well the swell was almost a non-starter on Sunday but the decision had been taken on Saturday to setup the Lapper course and if conditions improved then to lay the Miler course. Cherry reef was still working and there was still possibility for a heavy swell off 1st beach so the Lapper route was utilised – just as well as within an hour of finishing the swell was jacking up and the wave hollowing towards 1st beach.

 

The Lapper was set with a circuit distance of between 650-700m ; with a 2 loop course coming close to 1.3~1.4km. The nature of the circuit made for some fast times as buoys 1-2 was strongly protected from swell, buoys 2-3 was perpendicular to the swell and moderately protected, buoys 3-4 was cross-swell with a more acute angle than expected and buoys 4-1 was perpendicular to the swell and slightly lumpy.

 

First back to the beach was the newbee wetsuited Hare–Luke Ferguson (#0981) followed in by wetsuited Hare Niel Barnard (#0661)..

Race honours

·         Wetsuits~ goes to newcomer Luke Ferguson (who I expect to see starting with the Hounds next month). Dianne Emery (another newcomer and 1st female back) placed second in the category.

Interesting tidbits  Roger Finch successfully negotiated the Channel in sub-13 hours. It seems that sms’s from Cape Town based Otto Thaning reached Roger at the correct time. Otto had been following Roger’s progress via Roger’s tracking site. Roger also rated the AquaSphere goggles he was using as just the ones for the swim.
