2010 - What a year .. here comes 2011

December 30, 2010
What a year! ... 2010 saw 1SOMS exceeding the 100 swimmer count on 3 occasions.. Open water swimming in the Cape continues to grow..

The roots of 1SOMS is the Clifton Cold Water Mile of 2006 ...The Annual New Years Day Swim fell on a Sunday.. It seems a fortune of time ago... the original 5 still are participants..albeit almost as a tag team..I have not done the analysis but suspect that at least 1 of the 5 are at each swim..

The Clifton Cold Water Mile 2011 is this Saturday.. Registration is from 11am (not 10h30 as the calendar shows) ; Race briefing will be at 12 o'clock and the swim will get underway 15 minutes later...
As its a midday swim - any slap bang in the middle of middle of fry time.. please bring down an umbrella.. Sunscreen should be applied - but try keep it out of your goggles! Also a water bottle is suggested.

The 1st Sunday of the Month Swim is this Sunday ..Registration is from 08h15-08h50; Race briefing will be at 9 o'clock and the swim will get underway 15 minutes later...

Sea you on the beach..

July 15, 2010
For those who have seen the surf conditions the past couple of days... you will appreciate how large and powerful the sea is . In Durban the sardine run has started and punters start looking towards the Durban July while down in J-bay the surfing fraternity is enjoying the surf conditions..

Crazy to think that the World Cup finished a mere 4 days ago...

Tomorrow a number of open water enthusiasts uno dertake a journey far away from the coast in order to partake in the 1st Ice Swim. The town of ...

July 2010 - The World Cup of Football is here ...

July 2, 2010
A couple of games left to play and the new World Cup football titleholders will be known... I must say that I have enjoyed some of the games thoroughly but mostly I have enjoyed the spirit and the cameraderie amongst South Africans...Awesome!

What has this to do with swimming... Well we participate in a sport that we enjoy doing. Out there there are world championships and this includes swimming and lifesaving (to name but 2) and open water swimming has its own followers. Any title bestowed is...

June 2010 - The 1st late swim of the year..

June 4, 2010
I write this about a month after "The Long Cold One"... I refer to the Robben Island swim that took place on 2 May 2010. I was one of those who decided rather late to undertake the challenge. Just 2 days short of my first crossing's 20th anniversary this swim had some sentimental attachments.
Cold water pays little notice of sentiments and while I am a strong advocate of swimming the race I planned - I managed to break my own rules of not changing what I do and how I do it at the last moment. ...

April 2010 - 1SOMS & the last "early" swim before the Winter Solstice

April 6, 2010
April 6, 2010

This has truly been an experience for me... I keep finding that when I write-up the 1SOMS race commentary that there is always something noteworthy and/or unusual.

This February swim had terrific waves, swell and wind. The March swim was idyllic and flat. The April swim had a forecast swell of 4.5~4.8m (about 1.5 storeys high!). A SouthEaster was also forecast and I hoped this would dampen the swell and keep the rains at bay... it did. No where though was any mention made of a hug...
