The 3.7m swelss did not materialise..actually fantastic conditions with a swell breaking over Cherry Reef made for a deep flat water swim that was enjoyed by all. 22 Polarbears braved the conditions.. and enjoyed the Winter profile that Clifton Bay displays.

First back top the beach was Callum Bell who opted to start with the Hares and not the Hounds. I believe this did not count in his favour as newcomers

 Willmore;Richard;#0961             Hound    7    0:26:18    0:21:18    1
 Cronje;Johnny;#0966                 Hound    8    0:26:37    0:21:37    2

chased him down in the Channel Rules category. They also took overall honours ahead of Westuits

Amongst the women :

Ballot;Nadine;#109             Hound    10    0:27:40    0:22:40    4
Allan;Angela;#0768              Hare      12    0:27:56    0:27:56    14

A big thankyou to Alex (Who runs the beach); Nicole who finish tags you, Deon who snaps the pics and Kevin who is the starter... Also big thanks to AquaSphere who support the swim and provide the lucky draw prizes.

Winter profile of Clifton Bay - the NW brings in the sand banks and flattens out Clifton's sandy bottem... this results in a much longer walk when entering the water and makes for great body-surfing waves on 1st beach.

Sea you next month on 7 August...

What a way to finish with Summertime 1SOMS – a new participation record! Fantastic swim conditions… the first false start (and last I hope!) The day after South African Lifesaving Nationals was always going to be one to remember but then so to is it the last weekend before Iron Man South Africa. Interesting to note that the Channel Rules participants doubled the number of Wetsuiters so last 1st Sunday of Month Swim before Freedom Day swim had everyone brushing up on their timed racing.

Reminder: After the debate in February of wetsuit vs non-wetsuit (and confirmation from FINA that rule OWS5.5 does determine recognition of a swim ) I realized that a tad more result analysis was being asked for. Accordingly, there is now a race within a race (and for you and me still overall results information) by which I mean that “Wetsuits” and “Channel Rules” can now distinguish their relative intra-group position. Below the overall position table is the Top 10 times for Wetsuits and Channel Rules.

First back to the beach was the wetsuited Hare–Henning Blaauw (#0818) followed in by Channel Rule Hare Hare Brad Gale (#590)..

AquaSphere as you saw came on board for this 1st Sunday of Month Swim and sponsored some great prizes… I will be updating the www.1soms.co.za website so you can order products through me. I chatted to a couple of polarbears after Sundays jaunt and some opted to try out the range of swimming apparel … lets see if we can make some waves or rather whether we can enjoy some waves.

Interesting tidbits  The Saturday before saw a number of Polarbears complete Robben Island- Blouberg Solo crossings… A huge congrats to you all- I know how much determination and perseverance it takes to clock up the distance to make this a reality. It used to be said what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas – well the update I hear is what happens in Vegas is known on Facebook ~ Congrats Chris ! The camera waits for no one – please remember this when finishing…its probably not the time to blow your nose or adjust your costume… ;-)

UPCOMING In the near future is the Iron Man triathlon (9/10 April)…Easter weekend if you are taking/planning a trip up the Eastern seaboard has the Nelson Mandela Bay Bell Buoy Challenge .Take a look at the website for more info. A couple of swimmer have been making enquiries about open water training…drop me an email and lets see if I can assist. For all those venturing into open water PLEASE remember to keep it safe by swimming between the flags (or notifying the lifesavers on duty that you are planning to venture outside) and take a swim buddy along. It is much more fun to share the experience.

Prescription swim goggles have been found! And are available- please email me your prescription details so I can pass this on for quotations.

A huge thank you to the following:

Registration desk: Nicole Burger (Previously raced), Alex Burger (Newbees)

Starter: Kevin Fialkov

Lifesaving team leader: Craig Getz

Finish Team: Mikael Medonca (Timing), David Tates & Alex Burger (Positions), Nicole Burger (Finish tags)

Photographs: Deon Fialkov

Just a reminder that we hibernate for the month of May and then are back to swim an hour later than summer.

This is true for June, July and August.

Next 1st Sunday of the Month Swim 5 June 2011 (Registration 09h15~09h50, Briefing 10h00 and Start 10h15) bring down a friend to share the experience (and maybe even hold a towel) ! NOTE THAT IT IS ALL AN HOUR LATER… (I will try arrange the warm Winter water)

Iron Man South Africa - 9 April

Nelson Mandela Bay Bell Buoy Challenge

Challenge your fears

Africa's premier Indian Ocean swim, the Nelson Mandela Bay Bell Buoy Challenge, is one of the richest open water swim races in the country with a Men’s and Ladies winning purse of R10,000 each and over R70,000 in prizes for the top 10 swimmers. This international 8km Ocean Swim takes place during the Easter Splash Festival (Africa’s largest 4-day festival with over 500,000 visitors). Wetsuits are permitted for the swim with over 100 participants expected for 2011 including Serbian swimming legend Rok Kerin and India’s Richa and Rashmi Sharma. Check out www.bellbuoychallenge.co.za for further information.

Nelson Mandela Bay Ocean Racing Series -Part 5

Nelson Mandela Bay Ocean Racing Series – started in 2006 as a 5-part 1km swim series, the Series has grown into Africa’s largest family lifestyle beach event and features no fewer than six events taking place at the same time on alternate Sunday mornings throughout Summer (usually from Oct through to Apr). The Series includes a 1km ocean swim, 2km shifting to 3km (half way through the season) swim for the Ironman guys, a 5km Beach Run, a 5km Beach Walk, a 1km Kids Beach Run and a 2.5km Stand up Paddle race.

Your consideration of the above would be greatly appreciated. Over 6,000 participants and some R26 million in media coverage per season has helped this Series become the largest of its kind in South Africa. Check out www.oceanracingseries.com and give it a bash next time you’re in PE.

Amazing! My trepidation of having my usual land-based control (Alex and Nicole) in various parts of the world (Sun City and Sydney!) did not deter me trying a whole bunch of different admin techniques to keep it moving smoothly. Hiccups along the way admittedly but I think I am on the right track. 96 swimmers started with only 3 withdrawals. Very pleasant conditions once we were underway. I am uncertain it was noticed that WP Lifesaving Championships were happening at Blouberg –that is except for the absence of lifesaver participants!

First back to the beach was the wetsuited newcomer Hare –Neil Malherbe followed in by another newbee wetsuited Hare Andrew Slot..

Interesting tidbits Scanning through the top 10 placings in both categories I note that the fairer polarbears are holding their own if not showing up some of the others… Keep at it! There are some personal best times amongst the participants – congrats ! I keep getting feedback from Polarbears telling me how much they enjoy the swim. A welcome return to Judy Howard who I think had the biggest smile of the day… 1SOMS again has shown that it is a most enjoyable monthly outing.

UPCOMING In the near future is the Human Rights Day Swim (21 March) and  Iron Man triathlon (10 April)… and a couple of swimmer have been making enquiries about open water training…drop me an email and lets see if I can assist.

Registration desk: Olga Davis (Previously raced), Nina Tredoux (Newbees)

Starter: Kevin Fialkov

Lifesaving team leader: John Bull

Finish Team: Natalie Abel (Timing), Nina Tredoux & Olga Davis (Positions), Deon Fialkov (Finish tags)

Photographs: Warren Fialkov

Behind the scenes improvements and changes to admin : Sandra and Johan .. I am certain I will be able to work through the glitches.... also a HUGE thanks to Samantha and Nicholas for their assistance.

Just a reminder that we hibernate for the month of May and then are back to swim an hour later than summer.

This is true for June, July and August.

Next 1st Sunday of the Month Swim 3 April 2011 (Registration 08h15~08h50, Briefing 09h00 and Start 09h15) bring down a friend to share the experience (and maybe even hold a towel) !

Should we organize an outing for munchies ahead of the hibernation?

Amazing! Forecasts of bumpy incoming tide then an early morning mist did not deter the Polarbears from their monthly open water jaunt. The mist/cloud evaporated as a deluge of newbees arrived to join the 1st Sunday of Month Swim.

After the debate last month of wetsuit vs non-wetsuit (and confirmation from FINA that rule OWS5.5 does determine recognition of a swim ) I realized that a tad more result analysis was being asked for. Accordingly, there is now a race within a race (and for you and me still overall results information) by which I mean that “Wetsuits” and “Channel Rules” can now distinguish their relative intra-group position. Below the overall position table is the Top 10 times for Wetsuits and Channel Rules.

First back to the beach was the wetsuited newcomer Hare –Callum Bell followed in by another newbee wetsuited Hare Kent Horner..

Race honours

·         Wetsuits~ goes to Henning Blaauw pushing Callum and Kent into overall race position of 2nd and 3rd.

  • Channel Rules ~ goes to Chris King #692 ,Achmat Hassiem#824, Henko Roukema #646. These three raced down many and I look forward to future duels.

Interesting tidbits I keep getting feedback from Polarbears telling me how much they enjoy the swim. 1SOMS is more than just a swim its almost a family of people who share a common interest.  Thanks for the words of encouragement – I will continue to strive to grow 1SOMS and the enjoyable monthly outing.

UPCOMING In the near future is the Xterra triathlon… and a couple of swimmer have been making enquiries about open water training…drop me an email and lets see if I can assist.

Registration desk: Alexandra Burger (who single –handedly managed to keep everything on track)

Starter: Alan Green (Imported from London)

Lifesaving team leader: Craig Getz

Finish Team: Warren Fialkov(Timing), Deon Fialkov (Positions), Alan Green (Finish tags)

Photographs: Alexandra Burger

Next 1st Sunday of the Month Swim 6 March 2011 (Registration 08h15~08h50, Briefing 09h00 and Start 09h15) bring down a friend to share the experience (and maybe even hold a towel) !

Where information was difficult to obtain from the position book – I resorted to evaluating the race finish photo’s. This takes a bit of time but it does assist in resolving clashes…Now if only I could get everyone to smile when they finish …

 1SOMS - January 2011

Swim date 02-Jan-2011 Route Miler
Water Temp 13’C Air Temp 19’C
Water visibility 4m Wind n/a
Number of Hares 24(23) Finish Time 00:26:14 (Avg: 00:33:21)
Number of Hounds 7(7) Finish Time 00:23:49 (Avg: 00:29:18)

Rain expected and rain came through... what held off was the wind of the previous day. With the air temperature a full 3 degrees cooler the water (I hope) felt slightly warmer. Visibility though suffered as the sand had been swirled up overnight.

First back to the beach was the wetsuited newcomer Hare –Darren Noche followed in by stalwart Sarah Haiden.. Race time honours goes to Jeroen Kortsmit pushing Darren and Sarah in to overall race position of 2nd and 3rd.

Interesting tidbits Petrolene le Roux came back after to swim after exiting early on the Annual Clifton Cold Water Mile – due to needing her asthma pump. David Taitz is moving his personal best time up as he sets his goals for this year. Richard Hirschson and Allon Benzakein are in for a friendly duel as to race times – I do believe both may be still recovering from New Years.

UPCOMING In the near future is the East London 70.3 triathlon… and a couple of swimmer have been making enquiries about open water training…drop me an email and lets see if I can assist. For all those venturing into open water PLEASE remember to keep it safe by swimming between the flags (or notifying the lifesavers on duty that you are planning to venture outside) and take a swim buddy along. It is much more fun to share the experience.

Happy New Year! What a way to start the year… The build-up to the race had me in a minor flat-spin (always wondering who will be down, what the conditions will be like etc..). Part of the build-up has me has me co-ordinating with the lifesaving safety team to ensure sufficient on-the-water presence, setting up the bulksms notifications, arranging the paperwork, revisiting the previous swim to see if there is anything to improve upon and checking the weather forecast…oh and thinking about those events that are going to influence everything- such as New Year’s Eve and the forecast hangovers!

New Years Eve wishes included party hard its not a handicap if you have a hangover… I should not have worried a midday swim and wintery weather kept the hangovers in bed...Not one of the weather forecasts had rain on Saturday (but expected rain on Sunday) so the 5am wake-up to rain on the roof was a bit rude…Of course fielding phone-calls from all over the country about the swim told me that the Cold Water Mile has a place on the calendar…and calls at 21h30 on New Year’s Eve from Hermanus showed me that the swim was on!

First back to the beach was the wetsuited  Hare –Niel Barnard (who had picked a better line)  followed in by Keith Struthers. First female hares (hare’ess?) were Monika Hayes and Sarah Haiden. Race time honours goes to Johan Eksteen (newcomer) followed in by Daniel Erasmus (newcomer). I am quite certain that these two will make for great racing in the future.

Interesting tidbits Water visibility was awesome –albeit that there was a deeper swim as usual. Jellyfish were spotted but no-one was stung. Spotted on the beach (new to me) were baby shrimp/prawns/plankton which were an interesting curiosity.

A welcome (return) to Tom Hudson (British- annual Summer sojourn), Dave Spencer (return again!), Dougie le Roux from as far afield as Bloemfontein as well as all the newcomers.

$Modified route was approximately 300m shorter than standard.

What a fresh swim ! A measured temperature of 10’C on 4th beach with slightly warmer conditions off Cherry reef (Maybe +0.5~1.0’C?). I know that there were some mutterings about what would the swim time have been if the standard mile had been completed. My guestimate is that the times would have been about 4 minutes slower. Not to make too much of my guestimate I have included recorded race times for this year –remember when analyzing that conditions vary (as does fitness levels!)

First back to the beach was the wetsuited newcomer Hare –Chad Noble followed in by stalwart Sarah Haiden who has returned for her 3rd swim of the year. Race time honours goes to Nadine Ballot who pipped Chad by a mere 6 seconds – great racing!

I have been off-beat when it comes to calling the weather conditions – so the etv weather presenters are not losing sleep. My general take is that the weather pattern is about 2 months off – hence these over the past few days (which is more typical in November).

There are a number of swims still on the horizon – make the enquiries and get out into the open water. Remember to keep it safe by swimming between the flags (or notifying the lifesavers on duty that you are planning to venture outside) and take a swim buddy along. Much more fun to share the experience. Now if only waterproof cameras were truly temperature proof.

This Friday is Wavescapes on the big screen at Clifton –support the lifesavers. There is still social swims at Camps Bay on Sunday mornings. Fish Hoek Mile is traditionally on 16 December (phone to confirm) and WP has some long distance championships.

The Clifton Cold Water Mile is on 1 January 11h00~11h50 registration 12 o’clock briefing 12h15 start. Route is the Miler. Bring down a picnic hamper and enjoy the beach (sunscreen and umbrellas please).

Wow!! The forecast was 3.7m swell on an outgoing tide (sound familiar??)… the light SE’s on Saturday flattened out the Atlantic resulting in fantastic visibility (Yes – even I could see crabs scampering along).. 47 polarbears took part in the swim and few could have hoped for better swim conditions. { I do know a number of polarbears opted to do a Robben Island-Three Anchor Bay Crossing on Saturday while others opted for the Open water at Ashanti – some made it back in time to enjoy the beach weather}

Water visibility was near perfect (estimated 15m) but with little swell action on Clifton 4th to 2nd with a wave developing on 1st beach. Again swimmers commented as to the kelp forests that  cling to the rocks and how the sunlight cast shadows through these forests.  Honours for 1st back to the beach goes to Theo Yach (who is in training for his marathon 35 Km swim ) ; while fastest time (and Hound) goes to Henko Roukema ; next to make landfall was Jeremy MacDonald (and old salt from Clifton Surf LSC – now in Joburg)

Newcomers still make enquiries from all locations – it always surprises me to receive a reply back at 2am (but then I suppose that is what Blackberry’s are for!). This time round I was bemused to see an FB posting from a swimmer who had just finished his brother’s birthday and was now ready for 1SOMS (at 5am !)

Well done to the Cameron swimmers who completed the Robben Island –Three Anchor Bay crossing on Saturday. Once again there were fly-ins from Joburg for this … always up for a fundraiser-swimmers do it in the water. A special mention must go out to the swimmers who made the crossing; made it down for 1SOMS and then managed to stay on the beach (? Uh um) oh and also to those who had other commitments. Nice to see Sarah Haiden back in the water- I am certain its been a trying time staying out of the water.

A request – if you were on the beach for a 1SOMS please can you email or facebook me pics of the day– it is always great to be able to show others what awesome conditions really are there.

A very special thanks to the admin team (Alex and Nicole) who assisted to keep everything running smoothly and a huge thank you to the swimmers who come down to enjoy a little bit of Cape Town’s outdoor open water swimming.. Kevin (starter) has been down with flu this week but should be back next month while Deon had root canal on Saturday (he too should be back next month). Natalie (admin specialist ;-) ) celebrated a birthday today and we hope to see her next month too. Shaun has gone missing for the past few months and we do hope to see him on the beach soon. Rene (stand-in admin) I know has been busy … I think I should put up A-team pics so you can say hello by 1st name.

The forecast was 1.5m swell on an outgoing tide… the light SE’s flattened out and cooled the Atlantic resulting in fantastic visibility. Last month I hoped for an improvement in the air temperature – and today that hope was rewarded. 32 polarbears took part in the swim and few could have hoped for better swim conditions. { I do know a number of polarbears opted to do the Clanwilliam swim yesterday – some made it back in time to enjoy the beach weather.

Water visibility was near perfect (estimated 10+m) but with little swell action it was a swim designed for the pool swimmer. All that was lacking was a swimline on the ocean floor. Many swimmers commented as to the kelp forests that  cling to the rocks and how the sunlight cast shadows through these forests.  Honours for 1st back to the beach and fastest time (and Hound) goes to Brad Gale ; next to make landfall was last month’s newcomer Niel Barnard and Angus Dawe while Nadine Ballot placed 2nd on race time.

Newcomers still make enquiry (last one at 23h25 last night!) and arrive from allsorts of places. I must acknowledge those that come from far afield after hearing of 1SOMS either by word of mouth, website , Swimmersguide… Lucia Giesler was one of the newcomers who came through from Stellenbosch for her 1st open water swim.

Last season Garmin was kind enough to donate lucky dip prizes for mobile phones and fortunately I was able reward two swimmers – Charles Reid and Lucia Giesler who each won one of the lucky draw prizes. I truly hope they enjoy them.

Well done to the Gibraltar Straits foursome, English Channel solo, CLDSA award winners and Friday’s Robben Island crossing (Roger!) . Thankfully Friday’s jellyfish flotilla stayed in deep ocean with only a few made it into Clifton Bay. Fortunately most of the polarbears only enjoyed the visual display and not the stingers ! (except for me that is.. oh I was a ghost hound today ;-))

A request – if you were on the beach for a 1SOMS please can you email or facebook me pics of the day– it is always great to be able to show others what awesome conditions really are there.

1st Sunday of Spring – the forecast was for a NW from Saturday with a 3.1m swell on an incoming tide. To add to this was
postings of parachute jellyfish being sighted on a Robben Island –Blouberg crossing. My reading of the forecast was a bumpy,
messy surf and I believe I told some “newbees” that. What was presented to the 1SOMS “polarbears” was a flat bay with a light
NW onshore and “warmish” water conditions and a couple of bluebottles scattered around.

Water visibility was not perfect (estimated 2m) but with little swell action it was a swim designed for the newcomer. Honours for
1st back to the beach and fastest time goes to Blouberg lifesaver Henko Roukema (albeit that future swims he will be joining the
chasing Hounds!) ; next to make landfall was newcomer Jeroen Kortsmit (Neth) while the first Hound was Nadine Ballot who
continues to pick up speed.

The newcomer count continues to rise as swimmers made there way from as far afield as Stellenbosch (for the Western Capers)
;Johannesburg (for the RSA fly-ins) and Netherlands (overseas visitors).

Spring is here! (though the air temp could warm up a bit ! ;-)0 and I hope to raise the level of the 1st Sunday of the Month Swim
by securing some sponsors.
Keep an eye out for the 1SOMS swimmers who are undertaking a Gibraltar Straits crossing as well as those within the open
water swimming community who are undertaking fundraising swims for various causes.

Every swim there is something new to experience. This time round I was wary of a forecasted swell of 4.5~4.8m. What was experienced was a SE that flattened the swell and cooled the water. Further 10 000+ fish were in a shoal(s) that the seagulls and seals feasted upon. Leaping seals are often seen in ones and twos but when you witness 20+ seals leaping around a shoal it is quite spectacular. *Prudence favoured and the Miler route was adapted to avoid swimming over the shoal and through the seal and seagull feast. A number of polar bears withdrew after noting the high levels of marine life activity.

On the back of the 1SOMS was the last Cadiz Freedom Day Swim Qualifier. A number of already qualified were thankful of not having to immerse themselves in the cold water which with the wind-chill factor must have hovered in places between 9~11’C.

I always try to note the swimmers who make the race real. Often I try to keep track of the newcomers and the regulars and just those that add that special something to the race/swim. The hounds were noteworthy in their chase of the hares – while not first back to the beach Grant McGilvray chased by Kevin Bouwer and Rebecca Newson were the fastest three after deducting the 5 minute handicap ; while newcomers Dean Wesso, Andy Brodziak and Dominique Dryding were the first back to dry land.

Noteworthy accomplishments must go out to David “Tossie” Tates who completed the Miler in 55 minutes while newcomer Rod Slabber completed the Miler course swimming backstroke in 60 minutes. Slightly quicker regular Maura Sanderoff showed her mettle and received a helping hand from a number of fellow swimmers at the finish.

A mention must be made of hypothermia and the risks attached to open water swimming. Two polar bears were taken to Chris Barnard Hospital for observation and were discharged within 2 hours. One was a regular while the other was from the inland territory of Gauteng. I attended a talk a couple of months ago where the observation was made either you raise the water temperature around you to your core temperature or the water surrounding you will lower your core temperature until it equals the water temperature. Well there are not many truer observations out there – so what can you do about it? Firstly take the time to learn about hypothermia and your body’s tell-tale signs. “Icecream headaches” are an indicator of cold; not being able to feel your fingertips, toes or extremities is a warning sign. Learn what your optimum swimming tempo/cadence is – swimming below that will not generate sufficient heat to offset the heat being drawn from your body. Avoid gels/creams which rely on irritating the skin to draw heat from the surrounding environment. Learn about your body’s need for fuel – it is doing more work to keep your core temperature stable and thus needs food and drink. Alcohol does not raise your core temperature and in most instances will be to the detriment of you raising/maintaining your core temperature. Just a reminder when you stop being immersed in cold water your body will still take time to adjust – it is best to try to raise your temperature from the inside – through active shaking/swinging your arms and legs. My view is that this stimulates the blood flow to the muscles bringing with it oxygen allowing your body to recover. I do not favour sitting around waiting for the thaw.

A huge thank you to Garmin for the lucky dip prizes.

1SOMS 2010 -March

Swim date    7 March 2010           Route    Miler (+ Lapper)
Water Temp    14.5’C                  Air Temp    28’C
Water visibility    10+m               Wind    Nil
Number of Hares        112(108)    Finish Time    36m46s
Number of Hounds         25 (25)   Finish Time    30m49s

Wow! From the Cape of Storms in February to the Cape of Good Hope in March…
Near idyllic conditions saw 137 entrants at the 1st Sunday of Swim surpassing the previous record of 106 swimmers in April 2009.

Western Province Lifesaving Championships were taking place alongside the 4th beach start.
The lifesavers are truly the unsung heroes who volunteer their time to keep the beaches safe.
While many look rather young – all have to qualify as lifesavers by taking a Lifesaving Award (or Junior Lifesaving Award if under 16).
They are schooled in risk mitigation and reacting to emergency situations should they arise.

For the Polar Bears the safety goes often unnoticed and so it should when things go right.
Often one forgets that the sea does not tire and we are out-of-depth. Second guessing those schooled in keeping you safe is not a good approach.

The results show that Hounds dominated in the times – with 2 lifesavers in the top 7 recorded race times;
while Theodore Yach continues his fine form as he trains for another Island Crossing – 1st back to the beach.
As he says on Facebook training has begun in earnest.

The 2nd qualifier for the Cadiz Freedom Swim was added on to the 1SOMS routine and many swimmers took advantage of the fantastic conditions
to put their names forward for the 2 May swim. As warm as the water was (14.5’C) many noted that the extended time in the water brings with it
fatigue and cold. I was unable to note the number of swimmers who took advantage of the opportunity to feed/drink between the laps.
I truly believe that those expecting finish times in excess of 2 hours need to arrange a feeding routine to keep their performance at an optimum.

A huge thank you to the Garmin and Cybersmart for the lucky dip prizes.

DNF – swimmers who were stung by jellyfish and withdrew from the swim
Congrats to those who have migrated from the wetsuit. The results will be amended as I have time to trawl through
the pics to identify all the wetsuits!

There were a group of Hounds who took it upon themselves to motivate any swimmers that they came across.
This is commendable and shows the camaraderie amongst the Open Water fraternity.

Oh! Last note – the route was slightly different from normal so the times may not be comparable.

1SOMS 2010-February

Yikes! A North-Wester on an incoming tide brought very messy conditions (albeit warm water 14'C) to Cape Town and Clifton in particular. I called the weather on Thursday when it was still fine, windless conditions. Nevertheless I still hoped to be wrong.

77 Polarbears lined up after a delayed start. Facing large 2~3m breaking waves one was having difficulty imagining the more typical glassy conditions that is normally 4th Beach Clifton. I had the unusual task of calling instructions to duck under waves over the megaphone from the beach. Amazing how adrenaline settles the nerves as almost everyone who lined up elected to try to start. I am certain very memorable. A few minutes into the swim the first swimmers opted out and were deposited back off 4th beach to make their way to the shore. Instructions again over the microphone - goggles on , duck down , with the wave - its going in the direction you want to go...

The walkie-talkie communication between the lifesaving safety IRB and the beach increased as adaption of the route was considered. More swimmers opted out and the consistent NW resulted in conditions deterioating. The call was made - the swim is OFF. Safety is the most important aspect of a swim and never to be taken lightly - 77 signed up to start and 77 had to be accounted for. The timer was abandoned and instructions given to all swimmers exiting to provide their race number. All swimmers accounted for - GREAT!

In most instances this is where it ends- swimmers get the chocolate are sent for showers and a hot chocolate at Camps Bay recommended - however this was not to be. 4 of the lineup had flown down from Pretoria to use the 1SOMS Miler + add-ons as a qualifier for the Cadiz Freedom Day Swim. Pretorians do not often have opportunity for cold open water swimming so plans had to be made. After consulting the lifesavers and the Cadiz Freedom Day organisers arrangements were made for the Pretoria Four to re-enter the water and complete a timed 40 minute excursion between the race buoys that had been put in position. Successfully they negotiated the breaking surf and were chaperoned by the lifesavers for the 40 minutes. Re-negotiating the exit through the surf they were greeted with the news that they had qualified for the Cadiz Freedom Swim.

7.5km across from Robben Island to Blouberg is slightly different from swimming within a bay where you are within 200m of the shore and being chaperoned. Nevertheless this swim was a true test of mental stamina and should put them in good stead for the challenge.

There are a number of open water swims in the coming weeks. Amongst these is the Brian Curtis Mile (Grabouw 14 February), Round the Rocks (Blouberg 27 February) and Ashanti Dam swim (28 February). Google the race organisers and get some swim time before the next 1SOMS on 7 March .

In preparation for a Robben Island Crossing - you should be clocking up 2.5km swim sessions and learning how to drink and feed on your swim. In SCUBA there is a saying - Plan your Dive and Dive your Plan. Similar holds true for long distance swimming. Conditions can deteriorate and delays are possible so plan your swim to account for 20~30% more distance/time in the water. This means you need to feed- its a long way to go and as was shown on the 1SOMS this weekend the sea is to be respected.

See you next month

Yours

1SOMS 2010-January

Inclement weather descended on Cape Town... and I could just imagine the mutterings underbreath as the Polar Bears rolled out of bed and saw the overcast conditions. Thankfully Clifton remained wet.. very wet... actually there was a small moat obstacle course to cross before getting to the registration table ;-) !

51 braved the conditions which had deteriotaed since the Clifton Cold Water Mile...Water temperature was around 14'C, visibility was around 2~4m but air temperature was about 22'C and the swell had increased in strength making for a heavy return leg. Of the 51 - 18 Hounds took up the chase and successfully made landfall ahead of the Hares. 3 swimmers correctly decided to retire early and we look forward to their return at a later date.

Wetsuit-clad Danie Marais showed excellent speed while Robert Mason (also wetsuit clad) improved on his Clifton Cold Water Mile time but not position. Karen van Helden had a fantastic swim and was the first non-wetsuit swimmer back to the beach.

I believe the results show that the Hounds - racing in packs are able to chase effectively and reduce their race times. The finish is also closer with the spread of finish times being 15 minutes and not 20 minutes. There remain mutterings that the wetsuits should be penalised 2 minutes per kilometre. This I will look into further as I understand the frustration of the swimmers following Channel rules of costume, cap and goggles. I do not doubt that there is an advantage but I also feel that the swim is about having fun in open water and the results indicate whether the swimmer was wetsuit-clad- so the reader can interpret the results. Also there are a number of wetsuits who have migrated to the classic Channel Rules - and the enjoyment shows.

Next swim the last 3 results will be considered - if you are in the upper half of the results (that is below the average time less 2 minutes) you will be asked to race with the Hounds

1SOMS :1st Sunday of the month swim -CAPE TOWN ,SOUTH AFRICA

please feel free to tag yourself or others . I think the pics will show that the heavy waters (or the early morning!) were felt by many a Polar Bear..

Thanks once again to Cybersmart for sponsoring 3 prizes - Terry Griffin, Roy Lighton and William Thompson are the recipients.

Next 1SOMS is February 6 and the 1st Qualifier for Robben Island Freedom Day Swim will be tacked on to the back of the mile.

Clifton Cold Water Mile 2010

The Clifton Cold Water Milers rose to the challenge of a midday start after New Year's Eve and raced from 4th beach Clifton to 1st beach and back. The previous evening a strong South-Easter tried to blow away everything that was not battened down (including the warm water!). Fortunately the water stayed wet at a comfortable 14'C although visibility was reduced to 2-4 meters in Clifton Bay.There was little to no swell making for ideal swimming conditions. A number of visitors to Cape Town took up the challenge as did a number of triathletes.

First back to the beach and fastest swim time was a wetsuit clad Theo Blignaut from Pretoria. Next to make landfall was Theodore Yach and Tarryn Annelli (wetsuit) who were the fastest Hares closely followed by two  Hounds - Robert Mason and Stewart Rew (wetsuit). There must have been an almighty tussle amongst 2nd and 3rd -as the race times are closely grouped.

Special mention to David Taitz who challenged a couple of friends to complete the swim. All swimmers applauded his return to the beach - having successfully completed the swim.

Thanks to Garmin and Cybersmart who both sponsored lucky-draw prizes for the finishers.

A huge thank you to the admin team who have the near thankless task of sitting in the blistering sun and in the South-Easter ensuring that the race runs.

Next swim is 1st Sunday of the Month (1SOMS) on 3 January 2010 .

It looks like 2010 is going to be a big year for open water swimming.
